The WHO Country Office in Montenegro held a meeting to present and discuss the results of an earlier WHO analysis "Assessment of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy management systems in Montenegro" on 29 June 2015 in Podgorica. One important aim of the meeting was to discuss the findings of the analysis in order to define action to be taken so that the accessibility of health services for patients is improved, and consensus on corrective action is reached.

This roundtable meeting gathered representatives of the Ministry of Health general hospitals, and clinics and primary health care centres from all over the country, the Health Insurance Fund of Montenegro, the Institute of Public Health of Montenegro, the Association of Endocrinologists, medical faculty and the nongovernmental organization sector.

The general opinion is that despite country policies and allocated funding, the general public's knowledge of diabetes and its consequences are inadequate. On this note, a section on diabetic retinopathy will be included in soon-to-be-published guidelines for diabetes care, and guidelines on the management of diabetic retinopathy will be published.

The WHO Country Office, WHO headquarters and Lions Club International, whose representative had a presentation at the workshop, will continue the discussion on how to fund the non-mydriatic cameras essential to screen diabetics for diabetic retinopathy. The WHO Country Office will continue its talks with the Ministry of Health to improve patient care.
