Roundtable on diabetes helps raise awareness in the Russian Federation on World Health Day 2016

On 7 April 2016, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, in cooperation with the WHO Country Office, held a joint press conference in the format of a roundtable on diabetes to mark World Health Day 2016.

Participants included representatives of the Ministry of Health, the WHO Country Office, the Research Center of Endocrinology of the Institute of Diabetes, the National Research Center for Preventive Medicine, the Russian Diabetes Association and patient communities. They gathered in the press centre of the international media group RT to discuss statistics related to:

  • the detection of diabetes
  • the underlying reasons for the epidemic
  • risk factors
  • methods of prevention for this disease.

The WHO Country Office also held a reception at the UN House, which was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Service for Surveillance in Healthcare, United Nation agencies, diplomatic missions, WHO collaborating centres, medical universities and scientific research centres.

The reception began with a congratulatory message from Dr Haik Nikogosian, Special Representative of the WHO Regional Director for Europe, followed by a video message on diabetes from Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO. Representatives of international departments of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also made speeches.
