Representatives of more than 35 Member States of the WHO European Region met in Malta on 29 and 30 November 2015 for the European Consultation of the WHO Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity. The consultation provided an opportunity for representatives to comment on the draft final report of the Commission.

WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan established the Commission, which comprises 15 accomplished individuals from a variety of relevant backgrounds, with the aim of raising awareness and building momentum for action to address childhood obesity. The Commission was tasked with preparing a report specifying the approaches and combinations of interventions likely to be most effective in tackling childhood and adolescent obesity in different contexts around the world.

Representatives of each Member State provided feedback on the report during the consultation, moderated by co-chair of the WHO Commission Dr Sania Nishtar. Member States also provided updates on their important work in important initiatives including:

  • childhood obesity surveillance
  • food marketing to children
  • school food
  • price policies to promote healthier diets
  • action to promote physical activity.

Side events for Member States were also organized on food marketing to children and the WHO European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative, which now has more than 25 countries actively participating.
