WHO’s work for mental health
European action plan
WHO/Europe is developing a European action plan to address current mental health challenges, including the need for accessible community-based services that remove the stigma from mental health problems and offer effective interventions. WHO/Europe is consulting countries and other stakeholders on the action plan, which will be further developed and then submitted to Member States for adoption in September 2013.
In addition, WHO/Europe supports countries in developing safe and effective mental health services.
Training in countries
WHO supports the education of family doctors in identifying and treating people with depression in many countries, most recently in Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
WHO also assists in training community mental health staff. In Turkey, for example, it organizes the training of staff in new community centres, as their role includes supporting family doctors in treating people with depression.
