Workshop on the implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR) in central Asian republics and Kazakhstan
On 12-16 April 2011 a workshop on the implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR) in central Asian republics and Kazakhstan was conducted in Tashkent by WHO/Europe with the support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The purpose of the workshop was to raise IHR awareness among medical professionals and different governmental sectors and to facilitate Member States to create national action plans for central Asian republics and Kazakhstan. As a result of the workshop it is expected that countries of the central Asian region will conduct assessment of core public health capacities that was planned to be finalized by the end of 2009 and will develop national action plans for IHR implementation.
IHR focal points from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan were invited to the workshop along with representatives from different Uzbek governmental sectors. Nominees from the Ministry of Emergency, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Railway Company, the National Airway Company, the National Trade Company, the Committee of Border Protection, the National Tourism Company and the Ministry of Health received an opportunity to meet together and to discuss issues of cooperation and collaboration between sectors and governments. Key counterparts from the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan involved in the IHR implementation process as well as representatives from all 14 entities of the country were also invited.
The workshop concluded with a meeting with representatives of the legislation committee/Oliy Majlis (parliament) of Uzbekistan to facilitate IHR implementation in the country starting from the top level. During the meeting with representatives from parliament it was agreed that there is a need to review national legislation in order to facilitate inter-ministerial cooperation and coordination and to motivate different stakeholders to implement IHR.
