2011 National Counterpart meeting on Prison Health

4-5 October 2011, Abano Terme, Italy 

The WHO Network Meeting for Prison Health took place on 4-5 October 2011, in Abano Terme, Italy. The main aim of the meeting was to share information between the WHO Regional Office for Europe and its Member States on prison health issues and best practices in the Region and in particular to discuss:

  • Stewardship role for prison health
  • Minimum Standards for prison health
  • Staff training

The network meeting was followed by the Throughcare Conference 2011, which took place during 5-7 October 2011. On 5 October, the closing session of the network meeting was followed by the opening ceremony of the conference.

The conference aimed to explore the key issues in all organizations where people were detained – police arrest, police arrest houses, prisons (sentenced and pre-sentenced) and detention centres for migrants. The conference was of interest to policy makers, criminal justice professionals, researchers, academics, practitioners and representatives from the media as well as for community organizations providing services for prisoners while in detention and when released. All members of the WHO network for prison and health were encouraged to attend the conference after the network meeting.
