WHO regional meeting of national immunization programme managers

18–20 March 2014, Antalya, Turkey

The objectives of this meeting for managers of national immunization programmes from 53 Member States in the WHO European Region were:

  • to brief participants on global and regional immunization programmes, including progress achieved and future priorities in countries; and
  • to present and discuss programmatic areas of work and future priority areas for strengthening national immunization systems.

Topics for discussion included:

  • the regional vaccine action plan being developed by WHO/Europe;
  • progress and challenges in verification of measles and rubella elimination;
  • key areas of work in the package of accelerated action on measles and rubella;
  • the role of national professional and civic societies in disease elimination strategies;
  • integrated surveillance and laboratory support for measles/rubella elimination and poliomyelitis eradication;
  • sustaining the polio-free status of the WHO European Region;
  • outbreak risk assessment and risk mitigation;
  • the introduction of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) and programme implications;^
  • tackling vaccine hesitancy, driving acceptance and demand for vaccines;
  • considering lessons learnt from and the future of European Immunization Week;
  • introduction of new and underutilized vaccines (perspectives and support for decision-making);
  • application of the guide to tailoring immunization programmes (TIP) in Bulgaria and Sweden, future plans and update on current TIP projects in Europe; and
  • using technology to improve accountability and decision-making.
