Nordic/Baltic policy dialogue on implementing the Health 2020 vision

16–17 June 2014, Helsinki, Finland

To accelerate action on the social determinants of health and the implementation of the Health 2020 vision, WHO/Europe and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health of Finland are organizing a policy dialogue for the Nordic countries and Baltic states as a platform for sharing experiences and mutual learning, as well as exploring ways to cooperate in the future.

This meeting will gather senior policy-makers from ministries responsible for health or social affairs in the Member States in the Nordic and Baltic region (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden). Participation from other sectors is also encouraged.

The main objectives of the meeting are:

  • to present and debate the recommendations of the “Review of social determinants and the health divide in the WHO European Region”, in the context of the countries of the Nordic and Baltic region;
  • to learn from the experiences, lessons learned and plans of the countries in the region;
  • to broaden understanding of and debate ways to implement effectively the social determinants of health agenda, in the context of the Health 2020 vision; and
  • to explore future cooperation in this domain to advance progress and develop and share knowledge that is effective in implementing the recommendations of the “Review of social determinants” within the overall Health 2020 policy effort.

This event will also introduce and discuss a set of tools and guidance to address health inequalities developed by WHO/Europe in collaboration with the European Commission. These tools consist of five policy briefs that provide practical recommendations to reduce health inequities related to tobacco, alcohol, obesity and injury; and a series of interactive atlases that provide evidence and map the health inequities throughout the WHO European Region.
