Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Framework Meeting

8–10 July 2014, Copenhagen, Denmark

This meeting is intended to be the official commencement of the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) Framework Implementation Plan in Armenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan – the 4 Member States selected for support in 2014. The overall objective of the PIP Framework is to enhance pandemic preparedness by improving the sharing of influenza viruses with human pandemic potential with WHO collaborating centres for reference and research on influenza and to increase the access of developing countries to vaccines and other pandemic-related supplies.

Country-specific implementation plans for 2014 have been developed in collaboration with the WHO country offices and national counterparts with a focus on influenza laboratories and surveillance.

The meeting will be attended by ministers or deputy ministers of health from Armenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. In addition, the national focal point in each country for PIP implementation will be invited together with those experts in charge of implementation of influenza surveillance and laboratory activities as described in the country/specific work plans.

Outcomes

The meeting will provide a briefing about the PIP Framework and its implications and discuss how implementation of the PIP Framework can be facilitated by Member States and by WHO (this part of the meeting will be for high-level representatives, national experts and WHO staff).

On the second and the third days of the meeting, participants will plan in detail how activities in each country will be organized and conducted, and national experts will be trained in specific tools relevant to the PIP Framework (these 2 days are mainly for national experts and WHO technical staff).
