Twitter chat: Ask experts about eliminating the illicit trade in tobacco products

The WHO Regional Office for Europe is hosting a live Twitter chat on stopping the illicit trade in tobacco products.

The chat will take place on Wednesday 27 May 2015 from 11:00 to 12:00 CEST Copenhagen and Paris time (09.00–10:00 UTC/GMT).

The experts who will be available to answer your questions are:

  • Kristina Mauer-Stender, Programme Manager for Tobacco Control at The Regional office for Europe; and
  • Luk Joossens, author of the WHO background paper on illicit trade in tobacco products.

World No Tobacco Day

The 53 Member States in the WHO European Region have both the highest prevalence of smoking and the largest number of seized cigarettes in the world. The illicit cigarette market in Europe is estimated to represent 6%–10% of the total market. The availability of cheap illicit cigarettes increases consumption and the number of tobacco-related deaths.

The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2015, on 31 May, is eliminating illicit trade in tobacco products.
