Paul F.A. Van Look
Paul F.A. Van Look was a staff member of WHO in Geneva between 1984 and 2009; since his retirement in 2009, he has become an independent consultant in sexual and reproductive health. He holds an MD from the University of Ghent, Belgium, a PhD in reproductive endocrinology from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and is a qualified obstetrician and gynaecologist after training at, among others, the University of Leiden, The Netherlands.
After joining WHO, he coordinated WHO-funded global research on post-ovulatory and natural methods of fertility regulation. In 1998, he became the Director of the newly created Department of Reproductive Health and Research, which under his leadership grew to an internationally recognized leader in sexual and reproductive health and rights.
He received the degree of Doctor honoris causa from the University of Szeged, Hungary, and the 2008 Allan Rosenfield Award for Lifetime Contributions to International Family Planning from the Society of Family Planning (USA). In 2009, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics.
Since 1993, he has been a member of the advisory editorial board of Reproductive Health Matters and, since 2013, a deputy editor of Contraception.
