Dr Vassily Zharko was appointed Minister of Health of Belarus in May 2006.
Dr Zharko graduated from the Minsk State Medical Institute in 1984 and from the Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of of Belarus in in 2008.
As Minister of Health, he has introduced effective organizational and economic methods for governance, rational use and saving of resources, restructuring, extended and better-quality medical care and advanced medical technologies. In the framework of implementation of State programmes, he established interaction among various sectors, Government authorities and local health executive and administrative bodies.
Dr Zharko takes a responsible attitude towards decision-making at both national and international levels.
He is a permanent participant at sessions of the World Health Assembly and the WHO Regional Committee for Europe. Since 2013, he has been a member of the Standing Committee of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe. He emphasizes implementation of Health 2020 in Belarus, affirming his commitment to existing frameworks to combat noncommunicable diseases at all levels.
Between 2012 and 2014, Dr Zharko served as Chairman of the Health Care Council of the Eurasian Economic Community, and he was Chairman of the CIS Health Care Cooperation Council from 2011 to 2014.
Dr Zharko is co-author of a monograph "Health care in the Republic of Belarus: past, present and future" (2012).
