One-year milestone meeting of the south-eastern Europe quality assurance mentor programme for national influenza laboratories

9 May 2016, Zagreb, Croatia

This meeting is organized by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in partnership with the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL), and in collaboration with the South East European Center for Surveillance and Control of Infectious Diseases (SECID) and WHO/Europe.

The objective of the meeting is to share progress made over the past year detailing both successes and challenges. An impact and evaluation assessment will also be performed.

Background

At a meeting in Tirana, Albania in May 2015, CDC in partnership with APHL, and in collaboration with SECID and WHO/Europe, launched a quality assurance mentoring programme. The programme paired APHL public health laboratory experts with experience in quality management systems with 6 influenza laboratories in south-eastern Europe.

The primary goal of the mentorship programme was to help laboratories that are not currently recognized by WHO as national influenza centres to achieve the status of WHO recognition. A secondary goal was to help laboratories to systematically implement a quality management system that can be applied beyond influenza virological surveillance.
