Conference hosts

The 6th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health is hosted by the Government of the Czech Republic, the Moravian-Silesian Region and the city of Ostrava.

The Moravian-Silesian region and Ostrava share an extremely interesting and unique history. By converting Dolní Vítkovice area into a clean and healthy environment for its citizens, Ostrava has provided the perfect setting to stage the Conference.

The conference will take place in the Gong Multifunctional Auditorium, a state-of-the-art conference facility incorporated in a historical gas holder located in the former industrial complex of Dolní Vítkovice. From 1828 to 1998, coal was mined and pig iron was produced in this area at the centre of Ostrava.

The industrial complex has since been transformed into a unique national industrial monument with an educational, social and cultural centre of growing international prominence. The complex also hosts the U6 Science and Technology Centre and the Hlubina cultural area.

Reaching the venue

Ostrava can be reached conveniently  by frequent high-speed train connections between Prague and Vienna, as well as by flights from Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Katowice, Prague and other European airports. Local organizers will provide full assistance to ensure seamless transport to and from the Conference venue.

Local transport

Shuttle transportation will be organized from the city centre and main hotels to the Conference venue and back. Transport will also be provided to and from the airport and venues for evening social events.

Registration for the Conference

Those nominated by invited Member States and stakeholders will receive an email from the Conference Secretariat containing a link to the registration website. Nominated participants can register themselves or be registered by another person. Upon providing all required registration information, they will receive a password providing access to all documentation and information on the Conference website and on the Conference app for smartphones and other mobile devices.

On-arrival check-in

All participants should check in for the Conference on arrival in Ostrava. On checking in, they will receive the Conference badge that grants access to all events.

Check-in for participants and journalists will be available at the following locations and times.

Accommodation

All participants except those covered by WHO financial support should book their hotel rooms as soon as possible by completing the booking form of the hotel of their choice and returning it directly to the hotel. In view of other large events taking place in Ostrava during the same period, WHO recommends completing hotel bookings by 20 May 2017.

Participants receiving financial support from WHO should not book hotel rooms; their hotel rooms are pre-booked and pre-paid by the organizers. Such participants will be contacted directly by the travel agency for organizing practical aspects of their participation, including travel and accommodation.

Rooms have been booked in blocks in the following hotels. The special discounted prices offered for the conference participants are indicated in the booking forms.

The working languages of the Conference are English, French, German and Russian. Simultaneous interpretation is provided in these languages as well as Czech.

Side events

A series of side events on a wide range of issues related to the environment and health will take place throughout the Conference during lunch breaks and outside the working sessions. These events will showcase achievements, partnerships and initiatives, and will explore issues and themes of relevance in depth. Titles and times will be available in May.

Marketplace and exhibitions

Exhibition space for Member States, stakeholders and other partners will be available on a cost-recovery basis in the marketplace on the ground floor of the Gong Multifunctional Auditorium. Please enquire at: EUCEH@who.int.

An interactive exhibition area showcasing evidence on environment and health and related activities of Member States, organizations and partners will be set up in the gallery on the ground floor.

The exhibition area opens at 10:00 on 13 June 2017 and will remain open for the duration of the Conference.

Journalists are requested to present confirmation of accreditation and their credentials when they arrive at the Conference. Dedicated media space and space for interviews will be available on the premises.

Climate and clothing

The weather in Ostrava in June is variable; average temperatures range from 10 °C to 22 °C and it can be rainy.

Participants are required to wear proper business attire during the Conference and at all related events.

Currency and exchange rates

Czech Republic's official currency  is the Czech koruna (CZK). As of 4 April 2017, the exchange rate was US$ 1 = CZK 25.3. In Czech Republic the best rate of exchange is generally found in banks. All major credit cards are accepted and ATMs are found throughout the country, including in small towns. Cards can also be used for cash advances in banks and for payment in most hotels, restaurants, petrol stations and some shops. A fee is charged for these transactions. A commission is also charged when exchanging travellers’ cheques.

Normal banking hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00, although these may vary. ATMs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Insurance

WHO cannot accept liability for personal accidents or loss of or damage to the private property of participants and accompanying persons, either during or indirectly arising from attendance at the Conference. Participants should ensure they have insurance coverage for such events, including health emergencies.

Security and medical services

The Gong Multifunctional Auditorium will be closed to the public during the Conference and security will be present throughout. Within the Conference area, participants are required to wear Conference badges at all times.

A medical team will be on duty at the Conference venue during the sessions. In case of accident or illness at other times, please call 112.

About Ostrava

Ostrava, the third largest city in Czech Republic, is situated in the northeast of the country in the heart of the Moravian-Silesian region. Located close to the Slovak and Polish borders on the banks of Ostravice River, it offers beautiful views of the Beskydy mountains.
