Minister of Health of Italy and WHO Regional Director for Europe to hold press conference on refugee and migrant health

What: WHO/Europe will host the first-ever Summer School on Refugee and Migrant Health. The course is aimed at transferring and enhancing knowledge among diverse experts, and on and offering a space for bridging research, policy and practice around the health issues and needs of refugees and migrants. A press conference will take place on the first day of the 5-day course to assert the WHO European Region’s dedication to migrant health, and to define Italy’s critical role in this area. The course is organized in collaboration with the European Commission; the European Public Health Association; the Health Initiative of the Americas at the University of California, Berkeley; and the International Organization for Migration.
Who: The press conference will be jointly held by:
- Ms Beatrice Lorenzin, Minister of Health of Italy;
- Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe;
- Mr Baldassare Gucciardi, Councillor of the Sicilian Regional Health Council; and
- Dr Santino Severoni, Moderator and Coordinator of the Migration and Health Programme WHO/Europe.
Why: An unprecedented number of refugees and migrants have arrived in European countries in recent years. WHO/Europe and its collaborators launched the Knowledge Hub on Health and Migration to address the health and well-being of people in vulnerable situations forced to migrate. A lynchpin effort within the Knowledge Hub is the Summer School. This year’s theme is “Managing the public health aspects of migration”. It will serve as the starting point for upcoming efforts to bring progress and change to the Region.
