Season starts for Flu News Europe

13 October 2017

Friday 13 October marks the start of the season for Flu News Europe, which is a web publication published each Friday in English and Russian during week 40 to week 20.

The bulletin is a joint publication of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and WHO/Europe that covers influenza surveillance data submitted by the 53 Member States of the European Region to The European Surveillance System (TESSy). The data covers the spread of influenza, and the prevalence and characteristics of circulating viruses (their type, subtype and lineage, and resistance to antiviral drugs) and their severity.

Influenza surveillance is based on nationally organized networks of primary care physicians. Depending on the country, physicians report the weekly number of patients seen with influenza-like illness (ILI) or acute respiratory infection (ARI), or both, to the national focal point for influenza surveillance.
