International Migrants Day – launch event of the “Report on the health of refugees and migrants in the WHO European Region” and Migration and Health Technical Guidance series
18 December 2018, Copenhagen, Denmark
To coincide with International Migrants Day on 18 December, WHO will launch the highly anticipated “Report on the health of refugees and migrants in the WHO European Region” and the new Migration and Health Technical Guidance series. These are part of the Migration Health Knowledge Management (MiHKMa) project at UN City in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The event will be held under the patronage of the WHO Regional Director for Europe. High-level speakers, including representatives of the European Commission and the National Institute for Health, Migration and Poverty in Italy, will attend. In addition, a live-streamed panel discussion will review lessons learned and the potential impact and utility of the report and Technical Guidance series for policy-making in Member States.
As international migration grows in scope, complexity and impact, the need to collate evidence to inform policies and fill knowledge gaps in the area of migration and health in the Region also increases. The report, prepared by the migration and health programme at WHO/Europe, is the first WHO report of its kind. It creates an evidence base to support evidence-informed policy-making to meet the health needs of refugees and migrants, and of host populations.
The Technical Guidance series, developed over a period of 2 years, covers 6 priority issues in refugee and migrant health: children’s health, older people’s health, health promotion, mental health, mother and newborn health, and noncommunicable diseases. It offers a tool and a source of evidence to support policy-makers in addressing the issues identified in the report.
