Health Evidence Network (HEN)

Activities

HEN is an information resource and platform on health evidence primarily for public health and health care policy-makers in the WHO European Region.

Rationale

There is a need for timely and relevant information for decision-making. The huge quantity of information and evidence available in the fields of public health and health care is dispersed among numerous databases and other sources. HEN makes it easier for policy-makers and other interested parties to find much of this information in one place. HEN also produces its own publications on topical issues.

Services

HEN provides summarized information from a wide range of existing sources: web sites, databases, technical and policy documents, national and international organizations and institutions.

See the sources of evidence database.

HEN replies to specific questions that public health and health care policy-makers may have and operates a mailbox function to facilitate this. See submit a question. After a request is received the most appropriate type of answer is chosen:

  • a short answer by e-mail;
  • a one-page evidence summary based on existing reviews of network members’ publications or projects; or
  • a HEN synthesis report on the available evidence, or a joint policy brief.

Where a synthesis report or a joint policy brief is envisaged, HEN mobilizes a team of specialists, including members of HEN, who search for existing evidenc to potentially develop this.

See publications for all published material.

A steering committee advises HEN on its aims, objectives, strategies and approaches.

Financial support

HEN acknowledges funding and support received from:

  • the European Commission via the Directorate-General for Health and Consumer Protection (DG SANCO); and
  • the Government of France via the Ministère de la Santé et des Solidarités.
  • Pfizer Inc. in the form of an unrestricted and unconditional contribution to HEN in support of whichever of HEN’s activities HEN, in its sole discretion through its steering committee, shall decide. Pfizer Inc. has no control over the steering committee or HEN’s analyses, publications or statements.
