The environment and health process was launched in 1989 to eliminate the most significant environmental threats to health, using the approach that prevention is better than a cure.
This ongoing process is marked by a series of ministerial conferences held every five years. Environmental health issues are essentially cross-sectoral, and the conferences are unique in bringing together different stakeholders to take decisions, working with and across ministries and involving intergovernmental and international organizations and civil-society organizations.
