First meeting of the European Health Policy Forum

First meeting of the European Health Policy Forum for High-Level Government Officials

Andorra la Vella, Andorra, 9–11 March 2011

The global trends and health challenges affecting the WHO European Region require coherent strategies and concerted policy action by Member States. Countries in the Region have endorsed the development of a new European health policy, Health 2020.

The new health policy will be realized through a participatory process and underpinned by evidence covering the whole Region. To ensure that countries are fully involved in its development, the European Health Policy Forum is being established.

Hosted by the Government of Andorra, the Forum’s first meeting will launch the Health 2020 process. It will be attended by national delegations of secretaries of state, deputy ministers, directors-general for health and chief medical officers, and technical experts.

The objectives of the meeting are:

  • to define how the Forum can support the Health 2020 process;
  • to present the overall purpose, key objectives and process of Health 2020;
  • to garner advice on specific issues, including: the European action plan for noncommunicable diseases, the plan to strengthen public health capacity and services in Europe, governance and intersectoral action;
  • to share experiences and strategies in implementing the Tallinn Charter: Health Systems for Health and Wealth, and assess the progress made so far.
