The Health Systems Governance Programme supports Member States to strengthen their capacity to steer their health systems. This system’s function enables to define, lead and implement policies in health service delivery, health financing and resource generation, while responding to health priorities and reflecting own goals and values. In fact, strengthening governance at the policy, planning, purchasing and provision levels boosts rapid changes in the service delivery culture.

A cornerstone of health systems governance in the 21st century is making health policies more informed-based, intersectoral and participatory while enhancing accountability and assessing health system’s performance in the context of extended partnerships.

Key areas of activity of the Health System Governance Programme include:

• Developing and evaluating national health plans, programs and strategies
• Building institutional capacity for health policy development including accountability
• Supporting the collection and analysis of health evidence and translating it into policies
• Assessing health system performance
