WHO/Europe provides direct technical support to the newly independent states, the countries in south-eastern Europe, and many of the new European Union Member States. This support focuses, for example, on strengthening regulatory systems and improving access to medicines through reinforcing supply, reimbursement systems and pricing regulations. It also contributes to the improvement of the prescription and use of medicines through the development and implementation of treatment guidelines, improved systems for monitoring medicines consumption and strengthened processes for medicines selection. Specific attention is given to enhancing access to HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis drugs, in part through improved regulation of locally manufactured drugs.
Direct technical assistance can be provided in the form of capacity building and knowledge transfer, policy dialogue workshops, enhancing participation in networks, assistance in streamlining processes and drafting legislation, training and capacity building workshops, or monitoring and evaluation processes.
WHO/Europe also works closely with western European countries through networks, policy dialogues and specific projects.
