• Republic of Moldova hosts launch of global initiative to improve participatory dialogue on health reforms

  A global WHO/European Union (EU) initiative to support “policy dialogue on national health policies, strategies and plans” was launched on 24 April 2012 on the premises of the Ministry of Health. The partnership aims to improve participatory dialogue on developing, negotiating, implementing and evaluating comprehensive health policies with a view to promoting universal coverage, people-centred primary care, and health in all policies. It aims to strengthen country processes and where appropriate also aid effectiveness.
• Strengthening governance mechanisms for public hospitals in the Republic of Moldova

  A roundtable on hospital governance was held in the Republic of Moldova on 18 April 2012. The event was organized by the Ministry of Health with the support of the WHO Country Office and was part of a WHO mission on hospital governance visiting the country on 17−20 April with the aim of analysing the situation and providing recommendations in this specific area.
• Netherlands collaborating centre working on new approach to primary care

  On 20 February 2012, WHO/Europe agreed key research areas for the next two years with the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research (NIVEL), a WHO collaborating centre for primary care.
• Health system performance assessment for health governance

  On 16-17 February 2012, representatives from 18 Member States and a number of WHO Regional Office partner organizations met to explore the demand for tools to strengthen health system performance assessment (HSPA).
• Slovenia hosts equity focus health system performance assessment workshop

  The workshop on equity focus in health system performance assessment (EfHSPA) took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 1-2 December 2011. The workshop provided a platform for cross-country learning.
• Turkey “translated into action” Tallinn Charter on Health Systems

  In recent years, Turkey’s national health service has undergone major reforms, yielding significant improvements in utilization, effectiveness and health outcomes. Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, has identified Turkey as a successful example of a country implementing the values and principles of the Tallinn Charter.

  A report published yesterday reveals that while public expenditure on health care in England more than doubled between 1997 and 2010, the impact on health system performance has been variable.
• Look beyond health in policy-making

  Partners in developing health policy in the European Region are discussing how to push health onto other policy agendas at the European Union (EU) Open Health Forum in Brussels, Belgium today. Speaking at the Forum, Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, said that actively including health in all policies is vital to improving people’s health in the Region.
• Health System Performance Assessments for Azerbaijan and Estonia to be released shortly

  Following the recent releases of Health System Performance Assessments (HSPA) for Armenia, Georgia and Portugal, the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the respective Ministries of Health have collaborated on the development and implementation of HSPAs for Azerbaijan and Estonia. These are expected to be released later this year.
