WHO supports health workforce development in Tajikistan

A three-day, capacity-building workshop for paediatricians was held on 24–26 April 2012 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Organized by WHO in cooperation with the Ministry of Health's Republican Pediatrician Center and Child Surgery, the workshop provided training in the use and adaptation of an innovative computerized tool (ICATT) developed to help countries implement the WHO/UNICEF strategy on Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI).

WHO report reveals teenagers do not get a fair deal on health

Widespread inequalities mean that many young people in the WHO European Region and North America are not as healthy as they could be, according to a new report on the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, published by the WHO Regional Office for Europe.

Second Series on Adolescent Health is published by The Lancet

The Second series of reports on Adolescent health has been launched in connection with the 45 Session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development. 1.8 billion youth aged 10-24 represent the largest generation of young people in history. Reports present a conceptual framework on the importance of adolescent health from a life-course perspective, give insight into the influence of certain social determinants on adolescent health, indicate protective factors effective across a range of health risk behaviours, as well as display data from multi-country databases for a number of selected indicators important for major health outcomes in young people and other issues. Each report provided recommendations for possible future actions.
Progress towards Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 in the WHO European Region: 2011 Update

As called for by Regional Committee for Europe Resolution EUR/RC57/R2, this report constitutes the biennial update on the progress made towards the health-related Millennium Development Goals in the European Region. It draws on the most recent data sources available, as of July 2011, for Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 on, respectively, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDs, malaria and other diseases (including tuberculosis).
De-worming campaign in Tajikistan launched

The initial phase of Tajikistan’s first countrywide de-worming campaign began on 16 April 2012, and will continue until 27 April. Nearly 50% of children in Tajikistan have parasitic worms according to a 2011 survey.
Adolescent health in Europe gets a new promoter

National workshop on preventing interpersonal violence, Nicosia, Cyprus, 17-18 January 2012

A two day national workshop on the prevention of interpersonal violence was hosted by the Ministry of Health of Cyprus with technical support from the violence and injury prevention teams of the WHO Regional Office of Europe and WHO Headquarters. Multidisciplinary stakeholders attending the meeting represented not only the health sector, but also the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.

National workshop on reorganization of school health services and referrals

Acknowledging that school health services are well placed to help improve young people’s health status, knowledge, skills and attitudes and to promote health and prevent disease, the Ministry of Health of Tajikistan asked WHO to provide technical support for the process of reforming the organization of school health services. This work included a national workshop held by WHO and the Ministry on 1–3 June 2011.
Implementing the national strategy on child and adolescent health and development

The Government of Tajikistan approved the strategy in 2008. It was developed with technical support from WHO and based on the European strategy for child and adolescent health and development. The implementation of the strategy was assessed in May 2011, using the WHO tool to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the European strategy. Tajikistan was the first country in the WHO European Region to apply this tool.
Report from the Intercountry Meeting on Improving Paediatric Hospital Care published

The purpose of this WHO-Regional Office for Europe Intercountry Meeting on Improving Paediatric Hospital Care – Lessons Learned held in October 2010 was to review Member States’ experience and progress in improving childcare in hospitals, and to discuss challenges, disseminate technical guidance and decide on the next stage for further improving paediatric hospital care in the European Region. Particular emphasis was on how to strengthen the rights of child-patients to optimal health care. Participants identified options that could possible fill gaps and overcome obstacles at all levels and health providers, from national to community, and came up with recommendations on a specific set of actions. Dissemination of the meeting’s outcome could contribute to improve paediatric hospital care in all European Member States.
National health promotion conference on child and youth health in Estonia

The annual conference, held in Tartu on 10 June 2011, focused on child and youth health. The participants gathered information on the current state of young people’s health and health determinants, and studied obstacles to creating a safer and healthier environment for young people. The proposals made were published in the conference memorandum.

WHO collaborating centres are designated by the WHO Director-General to carry out activities in support of WHO’s programmes. This partnership working group meeting, held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom (Scotland) from 27 to 29 March 2011, provided an opportunity for collaborating centres and partners in the WHO European Region who have a focus on health promotion, public health and the social determinants of health to network with each other. It also allowed representatives from WHO and EuroHealthNet to describe essential areas of current work with a view to identifying how collaborating centres and partners can contribute. The report provides brief summaries of presentations, discussions and agreed actions arising from the meeting.

Data on school children’s health behaviour: important input for health policy

Representatives of the network of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, covering 43 countries and regions, met in Copenhagen, Denmark on 3–5 November to discuss the framework for the report to be issued in late 2011. The data gathered by the study over the past 26 years have influenced policy-making for young people across the WHO European Region, including legislation on smoking in schools, policy on alcohol use and guidelines on bullying. They have also been instrumental in putting young people’s mental health high on the political agenda.
