Progress towards Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 in the WHO European Region: 2011 Update

As called for by Regional Committee for Europe Resolution EUR/RC57/R2, this report constitutes the biennial update on the progress made towards the health-related Millennium Development Goals in the European Region. It draws on the most recent data sources available, as of July 2011, for Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 on, respectively, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDs, malaria and other diseases (including tuberculosis).
New tool on assessment of quality of antenatal and postpartum care piloted in Kyrgyzstan

Maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity is decreasing in many countries of the WHO European Region, however, much more should be done to accelerate the progress. The Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan has requested assistance of WHO, UNFPA and UNICEF in accessing the quality of maternal and neonatal health care to develop recommendations for improvement in consultation with international and national experts.
Latvia moving ahead in saving maternal lives

On 6–9 March, a national workshop on Beyond the Numbers (BTN) was held in Riga, Latvia, to discuss and adopt new ways to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity in the country.

Countries can substantially reduce their infant mortality rates by improving the care of LBW infants. Experience from developed and low- and middle-income countries has clearly shown that appropriate care of LBW infants, including feeding, temperature maintenance, hygienic cord and skin care, and early detection and treatment of complications, can substantially reduce mortality in this highly vulnerable group.

On 8–11 September, the Tivoli Congress Centre in Copenhagen set the stage for the 9th Congress of the European Society of Gynaecology (ESG). More than 2300 gynaecologists from over 65 countries attended. Topics ranged from contraception, maternal health, pregnancy and contraception for women with cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes to less familiar issues such as obesity, gender issues and violence prevention.

Safer pregnancy and childbirth in Tajikistan

Implementation of the WHO Making Pregnancy Safer (MPS) programme has helped reduce maternal mortality in Tajikistan. According to estimates by WHO, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the World Bank, maternal mortality fell by 44% between 1990 and 2008: an annual decline of 3.3%. In 2008, there were 64 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births in Tajikistan.

Directed at health care providers, policy makers and managers working in maternal and neonatal health, Beyond the Numbers provides approaches for examining reasons behind maternal deaths and complications as a means to improve quality of care.
