Progress towards Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 in the WHO European Region: 2011 Update

As called for by Regional Committee for Europe Resolution EUR/RC57/R2, this report constitutes the biennial update on the progress made towards the health-related Millennium Development Goals in the European Region. It draws on the most recent data sources available, as of July 2011, for Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 on, respectively, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDs, malaria and other diseases (including tuberculosis).
New tool on assessment of quality of antenatal and postpartum care piloted in Kyrgyzstan

Maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity is decreasing in many countries of the WHO European Region, however, much more should be done to accelerate the progress. The Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan has requested assistance of WHO, UNFPA and UNICEF in accessing the quality of maternal and neonatal health care to develop recommendations for improvement in consultation with international and national experts.
Latvia moving ahead in saving maternal lives

On 6–9 March, a national workshop on Beyond the Numbers (BTN) was held in Riga, Latvia, to discuss and adopt new ways to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity in the country.
Guidelines on Optimal Feeding of Low Birth Weight Infants in Low- and Middle-income Countries

Countries can substantially reduce their infant mortality rates by improving the care of LBW infants. Experience from developed and low- and middle-income countries has clearly shown that appropriate care of LBW infants, including feeding, temperature maintenance, hygienic cord and skin care, and early detection and treatment of complications, can substantially reduce mortality in this highly vulnerable group.
