WHO report reveals teenagers do not get a fair deal on health

Widespread inequalities mean that many young people in the WHO European Region and North America are not as healthy as they could be, according to a new report on the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, published by the WHO Regional Office for Europe.
Progress towards Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 in the WHO European Region: 2011 Update

As called for by Regional Committee for Europe Resolution EUR/RC57/R2, this report constitutes the biennial update on the progress made towards the health-related Millennium Development Goals in the European Region. It draws on the most recent data sources available, as of July 2011, for Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 on, respectively, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDs, malaria and other diseases (including tuberculosis).

Europe’s population is living longer than ever before. Average life expectancy at birth in the 53 countries in the WHO European Region is over 72 years for men and around 80 for women. While birth rates and total population numbers are declining in some parts of the Region, the proportion of people aged ≥65 years is forecast almost to double between 2010 and 2050.
New tool on assessment of quality of antenatal and postpartum care piloted in Kyrgyzstan

Maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity is decreasing in many countries of the WHO European Region, however, much more should be done to accelerate the progress. The Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan has requested assistance of WHO, UNFPA and UNICEF in accessing the quality of maternal and neonatal health care to develop recommendations for improvement in consultation with international and national experts.

The issue also features an article on the new European policy for health “Health 2020” which is currently under development and how this policy can be used to tackle the public health challenges of today such as vulnerable groups and inequities.

With technical support from WHO/Europe, the Ministry of Health organized a workshop in November that brought together officials from the Ministry, the State Committee on Women, Family and Children’s Affairs, representatives of other ministries (education, youth and sport, labour and social protection), and national programmes and institutions, major partners (WHO, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Bank and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)) and local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) involved in maternal, child and adolescent health.

On 8–11 September, the Tivoli Congress Centre in Copenhagen set the stage for the 9th Congress of the European Society of Gynaecology (ESG). More than 2300 gynaecologists from over 65 countries attended. National health promotion conference on child and youth health in Estonia

The annual conference, held in Tartu on 10 June 2011, focused on child and youth health. The participants gathered information on the current state of young people’s health and health determinants, and studied obstacles to creating a safer and healthier environment for young people. The proposals made were published in the conference memorandum.
New WHO/Europe report: an estimated 10 000 old people physically abused every day

Every year at least 4 million older people in the WHO European Region are estimated to suffer physical abuse: being slapped, punched, kicked, burned, wounded with a knife or locked in their rooms. Research also indicates that as many as 2500 older people may die at the hands of family members. These are the main findings of the new European report on preventing elder maltreatment, released today by WHO/Europe at the 3rd European Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, in Budapest, Hungary. The report gives the first description of the size, causes and consequences of elder maltreatment, and provides an overview of good practice in prevention.

In the past ten years, maternal mortality has halved but vulnerable groups are still not reached and many women die or suffer from complications while giving birth. Contraception is seen as the most cost-effective solution. At a meeting organized in Istanbul on 11 November 2009 by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), WHO/Europe, international experts and policy-makers from 20 countries in eastern Europe and central Asia pledged to step up the fight against needless death and suffering from pregnancy and childbirth
