Influenza

Outbreaks of avian influenza among people in Europe and globally

In the WHO European Region, confirmed A(H5N1) infection in human beings has only been reported in two countries, Azerbaijan and Turkey in 2006. Since then, no human cases have been observed in Europe.

WHO/Europe, with international partners, supported the governments of Azerbaijan and Turkey in responding to the outbreaks and continues to support these and other Member States in strengthening their capacity to detect, identify and respond to outbreaks of avian influenza A(H5N1) or other human infections with novel influenza viruses.
