Malaria

Regional strategy for malaria elimination

WHO/Europe supports countries’ efforts to carry out the regional strategy, whose objectives include:

  • ultimately to interrupt transmission of malaria in countries where it still exists and where elimination has clear political support and is feasible in technical and practical terms;
  • to prevent the re-establishment of malaria transmission in countries and territories where it has been eliminated; and
  • to reduce and prevent deaths from imported malaria.

The endorsement in 2005 of the Tashkent Declaration: “The Move from Malaria Control to Elimination” by all malaria-affected countries in the Region was an important milestone.

Even after the elimination of malaria, surveillance and vigilance will still be needed. Climate change and the associated spread of mosquitoes may lead to increased transmission in some countries.
