At its 21st meeting, the European Regional Certification Commission for Poliomyelitis Eradication (RCC) emphasized the risk of wild poliovirus importation and recommended that "national plans for action in response to a polio importation should be developed/reviewed as part of the emergency response plan under international health regulations" and that "countries should conduct an exercise to test the national response plan".The importance of such exercises was underscored in 2010 when the WHO European Region experienced the first importation of wild poliovirus since it was certified as polio-free in 2002. In keeping with the RCC's recommendation, the first "desktop" polio outbreak simulation exercise (named Exercise POSE) was successfully implemented 14-15 December 2011 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It included the participation of three Member States: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro.
Outbreak of wild poliovirus type 1 in China: 20 cases reported

As of 14 December 2011, China has reported 20 total cases of wild poliovirus since the outbreak began in August 2011. Of the 20 cases, 11 cases are in adults 19-53 years of age and 9 cases are in children under 3-years-old. The latest case had an onset date of 9 October 2011, and all cases are from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of western China.

The People’s Republic of China reported cases of laboratory confirmed polio through the International Health Regulations (IHR) network on Friday, 26 August 2011. The WHO Regional Office for Europe is keeping in close communication with the Regional Office for the Western Pacific and has notified neighbouring countries about the outbreak. The WHO Regional Office for Europe is conducting a detailed risk assessment with countries to assess the potential of this outbreak to spread to countries within the WHO European Region.

Rehabilitation in Tajikistan

An outbreak of poliomyelitis (polio) started early in 2010 in Tajikistan, eight years after the WHO European Region was certified as polio free. According to government statistics, 712 acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases were notified. Most patients are in the recovery phase, but some have already started showing signs of residual paralysis. All people affected could benefit from rehabilitation.
Response to the poliomyelitis (polio) outbreak in Tajikistan

Tajikistan, which had been polio free since 1996, experienced a massive polio outbreak in 2010 following an importation of poliovirus from northern India. The Government of Tajikistan responded quickly to the outbreak and alerted WHO and neighbouring countries. Consultants and special investigation teams were deployed within a few days.

From 30 May to 3 June 2011, WHO/Europe delivered three one-day training seminars in Bosnia and Herzegovina to strengthen surveillance of poliomyelitis (polio) and acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). Response to polio outbreak commended

The European Regional Certification Commission for Poliomyelitis Eradication (RCC) commended countries’ actions to stop poliovirus transmission after a large outbreak in Tajikistan in 2010. Meeting in St Petersburg, Russian Federation, on 26–27 January 2011, the RCC added that long-term structural and system issues need to be addressed.

Since the beginning of 2010, the Russian Federation has reported 12 polio cases. Tajikistan has conducted four rounds of national immunization days (NIDs) and Uzbekistan, three rounds. Kyrgyzstan began its second round of NIDs on 23 August, and Turkmenistan's second round is under way. Coverage has been extremely high in all rounds in all countries.

As of 11 June 2010, Tajikistan had reported 607 acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases; 239 were laboratory confirmed for wild poliovirus type 1, and 22 had been confirmed negative. There had been 11 deaths among the 239 confirmed poliomyelitis (polio) cases (4.6%).Three rounds of national immunization days (NIDs) had taken place in Tajikistan and two rounds in Uzbekistan. In both, coverage was extremely high: over 99% of the targeted populations. Further rounds are expected in both countries, and Kyrgyzstan will begin an immunization campaign in July.
Number of reported suspected polio cases on the decrease in Tajikistan

The polio immunization campaign is having a substantial impact on the number of reported suspected cases in Tajikistan, with more than 85% total decrease from the peak period. The biggest reduction is in children under six (95% decrease).
Regional Director commends Uzbekistan on polio immunization campaign

Latest epidemiological update on polio outbreak in central Asia

As of 1 June 2010, Tajikistan had reported 564 cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), 183 of which had been laboratory confirmed for wild poliovirus type 1. All laboratory-confirmed cases reported so far are from the south-western part of the country and the capital, Dushanbe. The number of cases reported has declined in week 22.
Latest epidemiological update on polio

As the second round of the polio vaccination programme concludes in Tajikistan, the outbreak continues to be limited to the capital Dushanbe and the south-western part of the country. The governments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have strengthened surveillance and have begun or will soon begin vaccination campaigns to boost children’s immunization.

In response to a poliomyelitis (polio) outbreak in neighbouring Tajikistan, the Government of Uzbekistan, supported by international partners, launched a nationwide immunization campaign on 17 May. More than 2.8 million children will be vaccinated over the next 6 days.

Polio situation update from Tajikistan

As of 28 April 2010, Tajikistan has reported 171 cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) to WHO. Laboratory tests have confirmed wild poliovirus type 1 in 32 cases. WHO is investigating the outbreak and supporting the Government of Tajikistan in strengthening surveillance, immunization programmes and outbreak response capacity.

WHO responds to imported polio outbreak in Tajikistan

WHO has deployed a team of experts to investigate a polio outbreak in south-west Tajikistan, in the area bordering Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of poliovirus type 1 in the country and tests are ongoing to further characterize the virus. WHO is performing a field-based risk assessment of the situation and providing technical support to the Government of Tajikistan. This is the first imported polio outbreak in the WHO European Region since the Region was certified polio-free in 2002.
