Guidelines on responding to the detection of wild poliovirus in the WHO European Region

The polio outbreaks in 2003–2006 document the ability of polio to spread rapidly around the world to infect polio-free areas. Although the European Region was certified as being free of polio in 2002, the countries of the Region remain at risk from ongoing wild poliovirus transmission in both the endemic and non-endemic countries.
