Montenegro conducts successful survey on foodborne diseases prevention

In line with the Biennial Collaborative Agreement (BCA) 2010-2011, signed between the government of Montenegro and WHO/Europe, the activities on strengthening capacities for foodborne diseases prevention have been implemented in Montenegro.

In the scope of these activities, a survey has been carried out on policies in Montenegrin hospitals, in relation to malnutrition and health promotion in the areas of nutrition and physical activity.

The survey was conducted in all general hospitals in Motenegro, including the private general hospital “Meljine” in municipality of Herceg Novi and in all special hospitals: Special Hospital for Lung Diseases “Dr Joval Bulajic” – Brezovik in the municipality of Niksic, Special Psychiatric Hospital “Dobrota” in the municipality of Kotor, Special Hospital for Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery and Neurology “Vaso Cukovic” in the municipality of Risan, and Private Hospital “Codra” in the municipality of Podgorica.

The WHO questionnaire was used in this survey, which encompassed several different areas:

  • general questions at the national level
  • health promotion – general organization of the hospitals
  • nutritional care
  • hospital meals
  • training and knowledge of hospital staff
  • primary care nutrition management of hospital patients
  • barriers and success
  • project concerning food and nutrition at hospitals
  • food safety.

The basic survey results on nutrition and foods safety in Montenegrin hospitals with key conclusions and recommendations were presented at the working meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Health of Montenegro, Institute of Public Health of Montenegro and hospitals in Montenegro, was organized on 26 December 2011.

The purpose of this survey is to use its results together with results of other countries of the European Region to validate the WHO study being developed in the area of hospital nutrition and for defining the key recommendations at the region level.
