• Tajikistan launches National Immunization Days against diphtheria

  As part of a national campaign to combat diphtheria, 23 to 28 April were designated as National Immunization Days in Tajikistan. In this first phase of the campaign, 730 000 children aged 3 to 6 were targeted to receive diphtheria vaccinations.

  As part of the seventh European Immunization Week, celebrated from 21 to 27 April 2012 in all 53 countries of the WHO European Region, several activities were organized throughout Tajikistan. These included a press conference, dissemination of educational materials and radio programmes dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of immunization.

  During European Immunization Week, WHO/Europe organized a Twitter chat on 26 April 2012 to answer questions about immunization. The discussions focused on the role of health care providers, reasons behind low immunization coverage and risks of measles outbreaks in the region.
• Turkmenistan celebrates European Immunization Week

  Many activities are planned in Turkmenistan to raise public awareness during European Immunization Week 2012. These include establishment of special hotline services in health institutions; contests on knowledge of new vaccines organized by vaccinators, medical students and professors; television and radio spots, articles in various news media; “healthy life style and vaccination” lessons in schools and awareness sessions to be carried out for pregnant women.

• Tajikistan enhances immunization safety in preparation for nationwide campaign

  Policy-makers, primary health care clinicians and other experts from across Tajikistan attended a seminar on 4–6 April focused on immunization safety. The seminar provided training and a platform for discussion of safety issues in advance of a mass immunization campaign against diphtheria and tetanus, to be held 23-28 April 2012.

  WHO/Europe today received confirmation that, for the first time since European Immunization Week was introduced in 2005, all 53 countries in the WHO European Region will participate in the initiative.   WHO has now consolidated its recommendations for interrupted and delayed vaccination and made them available in one summary table, in order to help guide national immunization programmes in this regard.
• WHO/Europe workshop on preparedness for rotavirus vaccine introduction

  The WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe), in collaboration with UNICEF’s Central, Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States Regional Office (CEECIS), held a regional workshop on preparedness for the introduction of rotavirus vaccines in Copenhagen, Denmark on 31 January – 1 February 2012. Participants included the managers of National Immunization Programmes, immunization staff and communication specialists form Armenia, Georgia and the Republic of Moldova, as well as representatives from WHO and UNICEF regional and country offices.
• New report on progress towards global measles control

  An article on progress towards global measles control during the period 2000-2010 has been published in the most recent edition of the World Health Organization's Weekly Epidemiological Record. The report shows improvements in vaccination coverage and surveillance, but continued challenges in some regions where outbreaks continue to occur.
• Upcoming international symposium on rubella elimination and CRS prevention in Europe

  On 8-10 February 2012, a symposium titled “Progress Toward Rubella Elimination and CRS Prevention in Europe” will take place in Rome, Italy. This international symposium has been organized to increase awareness about rubella and congenital rubella syndrome and to remind the medical community and partners in the WHO European Region of the effectiveness of MMR vaccination against rubella.
