National IHR focal points

The National IHR Focal Point (NFP) is a national centre, authorized and designated by each State Party, accessible at all times for communication related to IHR implementation with WHO IHR Contact Points.

Mandatory functions of the NFPs include:

  • urgent communication with WHO IHR Contact Points about events relevant to IHR; and
  • disseminating information from WHO IHR Contact Points to relevant sectors and stakeholders within the country, including those responsible for points of entry.

States Parties must provide WHO with regular updates of the NFP contact details.

In Member States of the European Union, the NFP is mostly the same as the contact point for the Early Warning and Response System (EWRS).
