About EuroHEAT

EuroHEAT quantified the health effects of heat in European cities and identified options for improving health systems’ preparedness for and response to the effects of heat-waves. The project, running from 2005 to 2007, was coordinated by WHO/Europe and co-funded by the European Commission (EC) Directorate-General for Health and Consumers.

Its activities contributed to the implementation of the Declaration of the Fourth WHO Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health (2004) and of the European Environment and Health Action Plan for 2004–2010.

The core EuroHEAT team comprised representatives from 7 European scientific institutions; it was supported by an advisory committee of 19 experts from 14 countries and the EC.

Building on the results of related EC-funded projects, such as those on strategies for adaptation to climate change and the public health effects of extreme weather events, the EuroHEAT team extensively consulted a variety of stakeholders, such as health care providers, public health experts, epidemiologists and meteorologists.
