Guidance on water supply and sanitation in extreme weather events

This publication describes how adaptation policies should consider the new risks from extreme weather events, how vulnerabilities can be identified and which management procedures can be applied to ensure sustained protection of health.

  • Policy guidance on water-related disease surveillance
The guidance explains countries’ legal obligations related to disease surveillance under the Protocol and other international frameworks, and gives advice on policy to set up and maintain an effective and efficient disease surveillance system. These explanations are coupled with illustrative examples of good practice in the European Region.
  • Environmental health inequalities in Europe. Assessment report
The main findings indicate that socioeconomic and demographic inequalities in risk exposure are present in all countries, though they vary from country to country. The report reviews inequalities related to housing, injuries, and the environment, identifies gaps in evidence that still need to be filled, and suggests priority action to be taken at both the subregional and the national level, bearing in mind those national variations.
  • Environmental burden of disease associated with inadequate housing. Summary report.
This summary report presents key findings of the report “Environmental burden of disease associated with inadequate housing”. It provides evidence that the health consequences of inadequate housing are substantial. Improving housing in a way that removes or minimizes the negative impact on health and safety and promotes a healthier living environment is good for the residents and beneficial for society.
  • Technical guidance on water-related disease surveillance
This guidance is intended to assist the countries that are Parties to the Protocol on Water and Health to the 1992 Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes in establishing and/or strengthening their detection and early warning systems, contingency plans and capacity to respond to outbreaks of water-related disease accordance with article 8 of the Protocol. The guidance reviews the main threats to health related to water services, recalls basic concepts of epidemiology and disease surveillance and advises on data management and analysis.
