Progress towards Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 in the WHO European Region: 2011 Update

As called for by Regional Committee for Europe Resolution EUR/RC57/R2, this report constitutes the biennial update on the progress made towards the health-related Millennium Development Goals in the European Region. It draws on the most recent data sources available, as of July 2011, for Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 on, respectively, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDs, malaria and other diseases (including tuberculosis).

Today, WHO/Europe launches the road map to prevent and combat multidrug- and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (M/XDR-TB) for the 53 countries in the WHO European Region.
TB Road map and action plan to be launched in Moscow

The new Road map and action plan to prevent and combat drug resistant TB in the European Region will be launched 10 October 2011, at the International MDG-6 Forum, in Moscow, Russian Federation, where donors, international agencies and health decision-makers from Europe will discuss accelerated action to reach the Millennium Development Goal 6.

Violence against women: an urgent public health priority

Addressing violence against women is central to the achievement of Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 3 on women's empowerment and gender equality, as well as MDGs 4, 5 and 6. It is also a peace and security issue. In spite of this recognition, investment in prevention and in services for survivors remains woefully inadequate.

This briefing highlights the implications that gender inequity has for the achievement of MDG 4 and 5 on maternal and child health. It is a follow-up to World Health Assembly resolution 63.15, which urges Member States to renew their commitment to prevent and eliminate maternal, newborn and child mortality and morbidity and to World Health Assembly resolution 60.25 that urges WHO and Member States to integrate gender analysis into their work. The briefing focuses on the actions that health systems can take to address gender inequity within and beyond the health sector.

WHO/Europe is organizing a meeting for Government officials, UN agencies and other partners with the overall aim to review the progress in achieving MDGs 3, 4 and 5 in the WHO European Region, and identify immediate and long term actions for the reduction of child mortality and improvement of maternal health in the region. The meeting will emphasize how gender inequalities impact on the achievement of MDG 4 and 5.
