“Roma health newsletter”: first issue

WHO/Europe, along with the European Commission and the University of Alicante, Spain, started a quarterly newsletter to share information and resources for improving Roma health. The first issue is out now.
Forum finalizes Health 2020 policy framework

The third meeting of the European Health Policy Forum of High-level Government Officials took place in Brussels, Belgium on 19–20 April 2012. The Forum advised WHO/Europe on the final shape of the Health 2020 policy framework and three other key documents that will be submitted to the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in September 2012.
Scaling up action for Roma health in Serbia and beyond

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights, Public Administration and Local Self-government of Serbia, supported by WHO and other international partners, held a Roma health forum in Belgrade on 28–29 February 2012, and adopted a national declaration on Roma health.

Issue No 73 of Entre Nous, “Causes and consequences: What determines our sexual and reproductive health?” focuses on the relationship between health inequities, social determinants of health and sexual and reproductive health, highlighting the progress, challenges, current status and commitment that has been made in this area throughout the European Region. The issue also features an article on the new European policy for health “Health 2020” which is currently under development and how this policy can be used to tackle the public health challenges of today such as vulnerable groups and inequities.

New evidence from WHO: inadequate housing causes more than 100 000 annual deaths in Europe

Inadequate housing accounts for over 100 000 deaths per year in the WHO European Region and causes or contributes to many preventable diseases and injuries, including respiratory, nervous system and cardiovascular diseases and cancer. This is the main conclusion of a report, "Environmental burden of disease associated with inadequate housing", released today by WHO/Europe.
Third meeting on review of European health divide held in the Republic of Moldova

The meeting was held in Chisinau on 6–7 June 2011. WHO/Europe commissioned the European review of social determinants and the health divide to identify best practices and policy options to address socially determined inequities in health in the WHO European Region. The resulting evidence will inform WHO/Europe’s new European health policy. A consortium of academic institutions is conducting the review, chaired by Professor Sir Michael Marmot, of University College London, United Kingdom.
Migrant health: Italy signs agreement

At the World Health Assembly on 16 May, Professor Ferruccio Fazio, Minister of Health of Italy, signed an agreement with Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, on a three year-project on the public health aspects of migration.

The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia, in cooperation with WHO/Europe and WHO/Europe’s Office for Investment for Health and Development (based in Venice, Italy), is organizing a high-level forum in Brdo, Slovenia on 1 February 2011, to call for action to tackle the country’s social inequities in health. WHO/Europe will launch a report, “Health inequalities in Slovenia”, at the forum.

Promoting health in a fast-changing world

Developing a strong, effective and credible health promotion strategy requires taking account of major global changes and trends, including climate change, global urbanization and the ageing of the population. This was the foundation of a keynote speech given by Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, at the opening of the 20th IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion, organized by the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE).
