Increasing capacity to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Belarus

From 2 to 6 April 2012 a mission to Belarus organized by WHO/Europe will provide technical assistance in increasing the capacity of tuberculosis (TB) specialists to treat multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB).

In a recent survey in Minsk, one-third of newly diagnosed and two-thirds of TB patients returning for treatment were found to have MDR- TB. With over 4 000 new cases of TB reported in 2010, Belarus is already one of 18 high-priority countries in the WHO European Region. A subsequent mission to Belarus was organized from 28 February to 2 March 2012.

New report portrays environment and health in Belarus and recommends actions for improvement

A review carried out by WHO/Europe in Belarus analysed the priority environment and health issues in the country (i.e., water supply and sanitation, road traffic and unintentional injuries, respiratory health and outdoor and indoor air quality, chemicals and physical agents) and the institutional set-up. Findings from this analysis were discussed in a national workshop.

Tuberculosis project

WHO staff provided technical support with the preparation of clarifications for the Technical Review Panel of the Global Fund Round 9 Grant to expand access to quality diagnosis and treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Belarus. The procedure was successfully completed on 7 April 2010. The upper funding ceiling for Round 9 amounts to US$ 24 million for a five-year period.
World Health Day

On 7 April 2010, Belarus organized World Health Day activities, under the slogan “1000 Cities – 1000 Lives”. The main aim of the campaign was to attract the attention of the community, of heads of executive bodies, and of enterprises and organizations to the negative effects of urbanization on health, and to promote healthy lifestyles.
