First day of World Health Assembly focuses on universal health-care coverage

The Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly, WHO’s annual global meeting of ministers and senior health officials, opened yesterday. In her opening address, Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, emphasized the importance of universal coverage.
Bulgaria among the small group of smoke-free countries in the Region

The Bulgarian Parliament has adopted a full indoor smoking ban in all enclosed areas. The ban is due to enter into force on 1 June 2012. This new development will bring Bulgaria fully in line with the art. 8 of the WHO FCTC. In 2010, Bulgaria introduced a smoking ban but it was repealed.
Web based data collection and dissemination system for epidemiological surveillance of measles and rubella in Bulgaria

WHO/Europe funded the creation and implementation of the web based data collection and dissemination system for epidemiological surveillance of measles and rubella in Bulgaria. This is the second system after the acute respiratory infections/influenza system.
Fighting with cancer in Bulgaria

In September 2011, World Health Organization (WHO) consultants Jill Farrington and Jan Stjernsward visited Bulgaria and held working meetings with the WHO national counterparts on noncommunicable diseases for the preparation of the workshop “Cancer prevention, treatment and rehabilitation” funded by WHO.

WHO issues new advice on heat-waves

Over the last week, several countries in south-eastern Europe have experienced a severe heat-wave. WHO/Europe has issued new information sheets with advice for the general public, medical professionals and health services on how to deal with the health effects of a heat-wave.

National action plan on physical activity in Bulgaria

In light of European Immunization Week 2011 the association, “National Network of the Health mediators”, with support from WHO, conducted a comprehensive immunization campaign from 23-30 April 2001 against polio for children aged 1-7 years without immunization or no evidence of such, children without a family doctor and those without permanent addresses.

Policy seminar on reforming health insurance in Bulgaria: learning from international experience

At the request of the Government, a WHO mission visited Bulgaria to seek a better understanding of the underlying deficiencies and motivations for moving towards a multiple-insurer system. A policy seminar was organized to discuss the existing evidence and experience of insurers’ competition in Europe.
