
This seminar, held in Prague, Czech Republic, on 14 November 2011, called for better prevention of child self-harm in the country. It was opened by the Czech Minister of Health, Dr Leos Heger, and the Head of the WHO Country Office, Dr Alena Steflova, and attended by about 50 stakeholders from various sectors. WHO/Europe introduced the issue of child injury and violence in the European Region and Czech experts presented the findings of a national survey, conducted among more than 1000 adolescents, which showed the high prevalence of self-harm.
The seminar concluded with a declaration calling for better services for the prevention of child and adolescent self-harm and suicide, and for improved primary prevention through stronger nurturing relationships and the prevention of adverse childhood experiences.
A national conference with international participation on preventing child violence was held on 30 September 2008 under the auspices of the Prime Minister. All stakeholders present agreed that the information presented should be considered in the national strategy for the prevention of violence against children 2008–2018 and the national action plan on this topic for 2009–2010.
