• Vulnerability and health: WHO opens new collaborating centre in Hungary

  WHO has designated the Department of Preventive Medicine in the Faculty of Public Health at the University of Debrecen, Hungary a WHO Collaborating Centre on Vulnerability and Health.

  The strong nationwide smoke-free law covering public spaces (including workplaces, clubs and restaurants) came into force from 1 January 2012. It will fine an instant health care penalty upon the perpetrator of up to HUF 30 000HUF (EUR 100).
• Hungary taxes unhealthy foods

  Hungary is one of the first countries to introduce taxes on “unhealthy” food. The tax aims to contribute to a positive change in the national diet therefore improving population health and also to raise revenue.

  Over 40 Hungarian experts participated in a workshop in Budapest on 25 November 2011 to discuss the importance of reducing the harmful effects of alcohol with a special focus on prevention, including early intervention.

  On 30 November 2011, the government of Hungary, WHO/Europe and the WHO Country Office, Hungary, organized a policy dialogue on the impact of health system reforms implemented in recent years before 2010, and on the recommendations to institutionalize health system performance assessment (HSPA) in a country context.

• Pharmacists’ contribution to public health in noncommunicable diseases

  On 29 June 2011, as an official event of the Hungarian EU Presidency, a Joint conference was held for decision makers in Budapest on Pharmacists’ contribution to public health in noncommunicable diseases, in the co-organization of the Hungarian Ministry of National Resources, the Europharm Forum, the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the Hungarian National Committee of Pharmaceutical Care.

• WHO welcomes proposal for legislation for a smoke-free Hungary

  On Friday, 25 February 2011, a group of members of the Hungarian Parliament, with Government support, submitted a motion for legislation that would make public places, restaurants, bars and workplaces in the country smoke free. Debate on this proposal starts in Parliament today, 28 February. WHO/Europe welcomes this initiative.
