• Joint action on environmental health threats discussed

  The Fifth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health, held in 2010 in Parma, Italy, established the European Environment and Health Task Force (EEHTF) as the leading international body for implementation and monitoring of the European Environment and Health Process (EEHP). The first meeting of the Task Force will elect two Co-chairs,discuss the relevant aspects of the European environment and health governance and discuss and endorse specific actions as a follow-up to the Parma Conference commitments.

  The Conference reviewed what is known about children’s sensitivity of to non-ionizing radiation and discussed whether current policies were adequate to protect children. The evidence indicates that current guidance is adequate.

  Public Health Summer School 2011 with special focus on Monitoring health inequalities is taking place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 30 August – 1 September 2011. The Summer School is organized by WHO Collaborating Centre for Capacity Building on Cross Sectoral Investment for Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia and WHO Regional Office for Europe.

  The WHO Regional Office for Europe will hold its annual meeting for influenza surveillance focal points on 7-9 June 2011 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. This joint meeting with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) will update influenza surveillance focal points on regional and global developments and will provide an opportunity to exchange information about surveillance.

  Over 100 national experts attended a symposium marking World Health Day 2011 at Ljubljana University Clinical Centre, Slovenia on 1 April 2011. This year the national annual symposium on communicable diseases focused on antimicrobial resistance.

  Slovenia is hosting the second preparatory meeting for the third South Eastern European (SEE) health ministers forum in Bled, Slovenia on 14–15 April 2011. It is anticipated that representatives of all SEE health network Member States will be participating.
• National workshop on Essential Public Health Functions in Slovenia, 13 April 2011

  A national workshop on Essential Public Health Functions in Slovenia will take place in Bled, 13 April 2011 where approximately 80 national and international experts are expected to participate. The workshop itself is part of the activities agreed upon between WHO and Slovenia in the Biennial Collaborative Agreement 2010–2011. The conclusions reached at this workshop will serve as valuable input to the National Public Health Strategy.

  “Slovenia has become a pathfinder for progress in addressing social determinants and tackling social inequities in health,” commented Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, at a high-level forum on health equity in Slovenia on 1 February 2011.

  The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia, in cooperation with WHO/Europe and WHO/Europe’s Office for Investment for Health and Development (based in Venice, Italy), is organizing a high-level forum in Brdo, Slovenia on 1 February 2011, to call for action to tackle the country’s social inequities in health. WHO/Europe will launch a report, “Health inequalities in Slovenia”, at the forum.

  Slovenia traditionally marks the World Health Day by a series of events. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia, the Slovenian Network of Healthy Cities and the Municipality of Celje, along with the WHO Country Office, prepared a national event under the title ‘‘1000 cities, 1000 lives: health in cities counts’’, which took place in Celje on 7 April 2010.

• Follow-up on National workshop on quality management in hospitals

  A workshop took place on 16 March 2010. It was an important step in advancing the project of quality management in hospitals in Slovenia. Its main purposes were to raise awareness, to strengthen capacity and promote quality improvement.
