"Better labs for better health": Strengthening laboratory services in Tajikistan

In line with capacity building for improving and strengthening the national coordination of laboratory services in Tajikistan, a special mission was organized by WHO/Europe from 30 April to 2 May 2012 in collaboration with partners, including the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) and Integrated Quality Laboratory Systems (IQLS).
Combating malaria remains a priority in Tajikistan and Afghanistan

A cross-border malaria meeting was organized by the WHO Regional Office for Europe in collaboration with the governments of Tajikistan and Afghanistan in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on 7-8 May 2012. The discussions included a review of the current malaria situation and identification of problems/constraints related to malaria elimination encountered in the participating countries.

A three-day, capacity-building workshop for paediatricians was held on 24–26 April 2012 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Organized by WHO in cooperation with the Ministry of Health's Republican Pediatrician Center and Child Surgery, the workshop provided training in the use and adaptation of an innovative computerized tool (ICATT) developed to help countries implement the WHO/UNICEF strategy on Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI).
Tajikistan launches National Immunization Days against diphtheria

As part of a national campaign to combat diphtheria, 23 to 28 April were designated as National Immunization Days in Tajikistan. In this first phase of the campaign, 730 000 children aged 3 to 6 were targeted to receive diphtheria vaccinations.
European Immunization Week in Tajikistan

As part of the seventh European Immunization Week, celebrated from 21 to 27 April 2012 in all 53 countries of the WHO European Region, several activities were organized throughout Tajikistan. These included a press conference, dissemination of educational materials and radio programmes dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of immunization.

The initial phase of Tajikistan’s first countrywide de-worming campaign began on 16 April 2012, and will continue until 27 April. Nearly 50% of children in Tajikistan have parasitic worms according to a 2011 survey.
Family doctors in Tajikistan receive public recognition

Five family doctors in Tajikistan received the award of “My best family doctor – 2011” in a ceremony held on 13 April 2012. A total of 122 participants had taken part in the competition, which collected patients’ votes from 29 June through 31 December 2011. The objective of the competition was to promote family medicine in Tajikistan.

Tajikistan marks World Tuberculosis Day

Activities included a marathon radio talk show conducted on 24 March 2012, during which listeners were invited to discuss TB with a WHO representative.
New water safety plan in Tajikistan to reduce water-transmitted diseases in rural areas

During a seminar on 9 March 2012, and as part of a broader project to protect health from climate change, experts from the WHO Country Office in Tajikistan and the Ministry of Health introduced a water safety plan to protect small-scale water supply systems and improve the quality of drinking water and sanitation.

Nationwide radio programme in Tajikistan calls for public action to prevent cancer

To increase public awareness of cancer prevention and treatment, the WHO Country Office, Tajikistan, organized a special radio programme on World Cancer Day, 4 February. The programme, which featured an informative discussion between an oncologist and the WHO Representative in Tajikistan, was broadcast on the nationwide radio channel Sadoi Dushanbe, encouraging people to take action to stay healthy – such as by quitting smoking and increasing physical activity.

The number of new HIV cases in Tajikistan is growing from year to year. One of the objectives of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy of Tajikistan is aimed at guaranteeing access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for those living with HIV. Activities to achieve this goal include ART as part of the education for all medical students and training of family doctors in ART provision to support integration of HIV treatment into primary health care services.

Survey in Tajikistan reveals good protection against many diseases except diphtheria

Results of a sero-epidemiological survey of randomly selected persons in Tajikistan, to determine susceptibility to vaccine-preventable diseases, have shown that despite good protection against polio, measles, rubella and tetanus, almost half of the general population aged 1-24 years lacks fully protective levels of diphtheria.

Training in Tajikistan boosts journalists’ ability to report on climate change

A series of training workshops has helped journalists in Tajikistan to raise awareness about climate change and its effects on health. Three workshops were held in Sogd oblast (Khujand city); Khatlon oblast (Kurgan-tube) and Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO – Khorog). The aim was to develop journalists’ skills in research and analysis, and presentation of balanced coverage of environmental issues, including climate change.

Acknowledging that school health services are well placed to help improve young people’s health status, knowledge, skills and attitudes and to promote health and prevent disease, the Ministry of Health of Tajikistan asked WHO to provide technical support for the process of reforming the organization of school health services. This work included a national workshop held by WHO and the Ministry on 1–3 June 2011.
Implementing the national strategy on child and adolescent health and development

The Government of Tajikistan approved the strategy in 2008. It was developed with technical support from WHO and based on the European strategy for child and adolescent health and development. The implementation of the strategy was assessed in May 2011, using the WHO tool to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the European strategy. Tajikistan was the first country in the WHO European Region to apply this tool.
Safer pregnancy and childbirth in Tajikistan

Implementation of the WHO Making Pregnancy Safer (MPS) programme has helped reduce maternal mortality in Tajikistan. According to estimates by WHO, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the World Bank, maternal mortality fell by 44% between 1990 and 2008: an annual decline of 3.3%. In 2008, there were 64 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births in Tajikistan.

An outbreak of poliomyelitis (polio) started early in 2010 in Tajikistan, eight years after the WHO European Region was certified as polio free. According to government statistics, 712 acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases were notified. Most patients are in the recovery phase, but some have already started showing signs of residual paralysis. All people affected could benefit from rehabilitation.
Response to the poliomyelitis (polio) outbreak in Tajikistan

Tajikistan, which had been polio free since 1996, experienced a massive polio outbreak in 2010 following an importation of poliovirus from northern India. The Government of Tajikistan responded quickly to the outbreak and alerted WHO and neighbouring countries. Consultants and special investigation teams were deployed within a few days.

During 2011, measles outbreaks continue to occur in many Member States in the WHO European Region. As of 6 May, 38 countries had reported a total of 7028 confirmed cases. To make pregnancy safer, the Ministry of Health of Tajikistan started using a WHO tool called Beyond the Numbers (BTN) to review maternal deaths and complications in the country. Since 2008, five maternity hospitals have been pilot-testing near-miss case review (NMCR), and confidential enquiries into maternal deaths (CEMD) have been implemented at the national level.

As of 11 June 2010, Tajikistan had reported 607 acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases; 239 were laboratory confirmed for wild poliovirus type 1, and 22 had been confirmed negative. There had been 11 deaths among the 239 confirmed poliomyelitis (polio) cases (4.6%).Three rounds of national immunization days (NIDs) had taken place in Tajikistan and two rounds in Uzbekistan. In both, coverage was extremely high: over 99% of the targeted populations. Further rounds are expected in both countries, and Kyrgyzstan will begin an immunization campaign in July.
