Symposium launches plans to increase road safety in Turkey

The Third National Symposium for Road Traffic Safety held in Ankara, Turkey on 16-18 May 2012 was opened by Mr İdris Naim Sahin, Minister of Interior and Mr Binali Yıldırım, Minister of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communication.

Turkey initiates staff training for new community-based mental health services

On 27 March 2012, more than 120 multi-disciplinary staff of 47 newly established community mental health centres across Turkey came together to attend the first two-day introductory training programme on the basics of community mental health care functions.
Progress toward improved road safety in Turkey

The Road Safety in 10 Countries Project, RS10, met in Ankara, Turkey, on 28 February to discuss the progress achieved in Turkey in 2011 and to establish a workplan for 2012. This 4th Partners Meeting for the RS10 project in Turkey was attended by 55 policy makers and practitioners from Turkey together with the project's international partners.
New health system review on Turkey published

The European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies has released a new HiT (Health Systems in Transition) health system review for Turkey. The review describes advances in health status achieved over recent decades as well as challenges that remain, including in the areas of governance and patient rights.

On the occasion of the 4th year of smoke-free tobacco control law celebration, Dr Maria Cristina Profili, WHO Representative (WR) in Turkey, received the Health Minister’s Special Recognition Award 2012 for the exemplary support of the World Health Organization Country Office in Turkey, WR commendable work and contribution of the World Health Organization to the tobacco control activities of the Ministry of Health of Turkey.

An earthquake (magnitude 5.7) hit the Van area in eastern Turkey on 9 November 2011. It followed the 7.2-magnitude earthquake on 23 October 2011, which killed 601 people and injured more than 4152. Providing psychosocial services for disaster victims has been identified as a priority.

A powerful earthquake (magnitude of 7.2) hit south-eastern Turkey on Sunday, 23 October 2011, with its epicentre in the eastern province of Van. Turkish authorities are managing the rescue operations and have not requested any specific international support. WHO experts are on stand-by.
Community-based mental health services to provide alternative solution to hospital psychiatric care in Turkey

Reducing death and disability through road safety project in Turkey

Key national institutions in Turkey and international partners meet in Ankara on 29 September 2011 to discuss progress of the Turkey Road Safety project where speeding and use of seat belts aim to reduce road traffic injuries. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death of 15-29 year olds in the European Region, and kill nearly 1.3 million people every year globally.

90 cities now designated in Phase V of Healthy Cities

The WHO European Healthy Cities Network has hit a Phase V milestone. 90 cities have been through a rigorous application process and have been designated by the network. Congratulations to the cities of Galway in Ireland and Istanbul and Trabzon in Turkey. They will join other cities working toward the common goal of striving for health and healthy equity in all local policies.

Turkey launches health promotion activities and efforts for communication to the public

Turkey focuses on combating women’s cancer

Despite Turkey having one of the lowest incidences of registered cancer cases in the European region, both cervical and breast cancer have increased over the past 5 years. On 3 April 2011, the Cancer Department of the Ministry of Health in Turkey organized an International Symposium to launch “Cancer week 1-7 April 2011”. The Minister of Health of Turkey launched the event emphasizing that 2011 will be dedicated to women’s cancer.

Road safety project in Turkey
