Who we are

WHO Barcelona Office for Health Systems Strengthening, Spain

Established in 1999, the office is supported by the Government of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, Spain.

It has particular responsibilities for health systems’ development, strengthening health systems and policies at the subnational level, and the development of health policies that foster collaboration and cooperation among the countries around the Mediterranean sea.

It is the base for teams working on health systems financing.

The staff work directly with Member States across the European Region, to improve the performance of their health systems, turning WHO’s core values into practical tools to help diagnose problems and develop policies tailored to each country’s specific needs.

The office focuses particularly on analytical work and capacity building at the country level for improved decision-making on health-system policies and related institutional development.
