Who we are

WHO European Centre for Environment and Health, Rome, Italy

To understand the important link between the environment and health, WHO/Europe’s ECEH – which has offices in Bonn, Germany and Rome, Italy – addresses a wide range of questions, including the following:

  • What foods are unsafe to eat?
  • How can transport be healthy?
  • How can health be protected from climate change?
  • How can safe water and adequate sanitation be ensured across the European Region?
  • How can violence and injuries be prevented?

ECEH Rome collects and evaluates scientific evidence, develops policy advice and provides technical assistance on eight areas: children’s health and environment, food safety, global change and health, health-enhancing physical activity, health impact assessment, transport and health, violence and injury prevention, and water and sanitation.

It actively contributes to the environment and health process initiated by WHO/Europe in 1989.

In addition to resources from WHO and donations, ECEH Rome receives funding from the Government of Italy. It has about 30 staff.
