Who we are

WHO Representation to the European Union, Brussels, Belgium

The WHO Representation to the European Union (EU) works primarily with all three EU decision-makers, the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission, to help further to advance and enrich WHO’s strategic partnership with the EU.

It is led by WHO/Europe, but its work mandate is global. In 2011, the WHO Regional Director for Europe was given the responsibility to lead relations with the EU and its institutions for all of WHO. Moreover, the Regional Director chairs a WHO steering committee, consisting of the other five WHO regional directors and senior officials from WHO headquarters, which oversees the WHO/EU partnership.

The tasks of the WHO Representation to the European Union are:

  • to monitor and disseminate information within WHO on EU policies, strategies, initiatives, programmes and interventions;
  • to facilitate good working relations between WHO staff and EU institutions to help shape health-related EU debates;
  • to identify opportunities to improve the cooperation at the global, regional and country levels;
  • to defend, maintain and enhance WHO’s corporate image, work and reputation and ensure the visibility of its work and products in the EU; and
  • to collaborate with the United Nations team in Brussels to ensure the active engagement of WHO within United Nations work with the EU, including on the financial administrative framework agreement (FAFA) between the EU and the United Nations.
