World No Tobacco Day, 31 May 2006

About half of continuing cigarette smokers die prematurely from tobacco use. Thus, about 650 million people worldwide will eventually die from a tobacco-related disease, if they continue to smoke. World No Tobacco Day 2006 reminds us that tobacco is deadly in any form or disguise.

Smoking ban: the Irish success story

A growing number of countries now ban smoking in public places. Ireland is one, banning smoking in pubs, bars, restaurants and workplaces in March 2004. The public's reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, giving further impetus to other countries in the WHO European Region to use this weapon in their fight against tobacco use.
