Launch of a food safety campaign for tourism in Croatia
Sibenik, Croatia, 27-28 April 2009

WHO Five keys to safer food poster - Croatian versionWHO/Europe is promoting food safety in Croatia through workshops on food safety risk communication in collaboration with national authorities and stakeholders.

Discussions between national authorities and WHO/Europe led to the identification of the tourism industry as a suitable target for a food safety campaign. This workshop, organized in collaboration with the Croatian Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery, Ministry of Tourism, and the Croatian Tourist Board, aims to:

  • raise awareness about food safety in the Croatian tourism industry;
  • initiate an awareness campaign about food safety among the general population especially tourists, that ultimately will help decrease the occurrence of foodborne diseases; and
  • involve and inform local and national media about food safety risks and proper practices, in particular with regard to travelling.

Background

Providing comprehensive information and education to consumers is one of the six action areas of the WHO European Action Plan for Food and Nutrition Policy 2007-2012. This should be done through public campaigns aimed at informing consumers about food safety. The Plan also calls for providing targeted and timely risk communication on nutrition and food safety to the general public and specific sub-populations.

This workshop is part of the implementation of the Action Plan in Croatia.
